A recent review published in the Addiction journal confirmed that alcohol, even in small amounts, is linked to more than 60 health conditions, including multiple forms of cancer, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of injury. The findings also challenge the belief that moderate drinking offers broad heart-health benefits.
But there’s hope. The review found that many of alcohol’s effects can be reversed when people reduce or stop drinking. Blood pressure, immune function, and certain liver changes may all improve with abstinence, and brain health can partially recover over time.
Jason Kirby, DO, MBA, DFASAM, Chief Medical Officer of Recovery Centers of America, featured in a recent article by health.com called this “one of the most hopeful parts of the study,” while also emphasizing that alcohol “is not a benign substance, even though it is socially normalized.” Dr. Kirby notes that the evidence now points clearly to a dose-related risk: for most health outcomes, less is better.
For those who drink heavily or daily, experts strongly advise against quitting abruptly without medical guidance, as alcohol withdrawal can carry serious risks. Speaking with a physician or addiction specialist is the recommended first step.
