Federal regulators are taking action against certain kratom-derived compounds as concerns grow about the potential for dependence and addiction. 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a concentrated, psychoactive compound derived from kratom that can produce opioid-like effects. While kratom products are often marketed as natural or wellness products, concentrated extracts and derivatives such as 7-OH may carry significant risks, particularly with frequent or prolonged use.
Dr. Myles Jen Kin, Medical Director with Recovery Centers of America, told CNN that he has seen a significant increase in people experiencing kratom-related dependence. He noted that cases at RCA facilities have grown from approximately one per week a year ago to roughly 10 per week today. “I think this is a necessary regulation that needs to happen,” he said. For people struggling to stop using kratom or 7-OH, medically supervised addiction treatment can provide a safe, supportive path toward recovery.
