STAT News recently spoke with Dr. Myles Jen Kin, a medical director at Recovery Centers of America, about a sharp increase in people seeking treatment for withdrawal involving kratom and concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly called 7-OH.
RCA’s two Massachusetts facilities are now seeing an estimated 10 to 20 patients each week whose treatment involves kratom or 7-OH, compared with typically no more than one patient per week last year. Dr. Jen Kin also described an increase in the severity of withdrawal cases.
The report highlights the importance of recognizing that products marketed or perceived as natural may still carry meaningful risks. Anyone experiencing withdrawal symptoms or difficulty stopping kratom or 7-OH use should seek an appropriate medical evaluation.
