Medical Aspects of Addiction for Beginners

In this workshop, we will explore the effects of substances on the various organs and systems of the human body. Looking at the beginning on a cellular level all the way to total systems. From social, occasional use to late-stage addiction. It will be presented with many relatable everyday examples. This presentation can be used as a basic primer in medical aspects to a refresher course. This discussion will provide critical working understanding for clinicians and clients alike in everyday language.
Learning Objectives:
1) Participants will obtain a basic knowledge of the relationship between substance abuse and its impact on the human body.
2) Participants will be involved in several hands-on demonstrations.
3) Participants will be able to recognize the importance of this information and its significance to personal recovery.
Trainer bio:
Dr. John J. McClanahan is the Principle Provider at McClanahan and Associates in Arnold (Annapolis), Maryland. He has been an educator in substance abuse for forty (40) years and a treatment provider for thirty-five (35) years. He has been a provider of education and treatment services for both the public and private sectors. He has been a popular guest on many radio shows for a number of years. His unique presentation style combines motivation, enthusiasm, humor, and warmth. He holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling, is a certified Chemical Dependency Counselor and is a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He is the author of several works on addiction. He is the presenter in the video- “Relapse- The Seven Letter Dirty Word” and sixteen (16) other titles. He has national recognition in the field of addiction and its treatment. In addition to his private practice and other various projects, he is visiting guest lecturer at Father Martin Ashley and several other internationally recognized treatment facilities.
