Recovery Centers of America battles substance abuse crisis during pandemic

Recovery Centers of America (RCA), a leading drug and alcohol treatment provider, has seen an uptick in substance abuse since the start of the COVID-19 across the country and the greater Philadelphia region.

One year into the pandemic, social isolation has made it difficult for those with addiction issues, and the demand for recovery services has become widespread. With many people stuck at home and overdose rates on the rise, addiction treatment professionals at RCA are on standby and ready, willing, and able to help patients and their families get the treatment they need through its full continuum of care.

“We’ve taken people out of their comfort zone,” said Associate Director of Intervention at Recovery Centers of America Robert Strauber. As a person in long-term recovery, Strauber has witnessed first-hand the devastation that substance use disorders (SUD) can bring to the individual and their families. “We’ve taken people out of their work environment. We’ve taken them out of where they used to go play. It was almost like the fuse was lit once we pulled individuals out from their community. The markers were still there. Maybe that person was a heavy drinker or a recreational user, and now their use has become more chronic.”
