What Is Alcohol Awareness Month?

Alcohol Awareness Month is held in April to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol abuse and promote responsible drinking habits. It was established by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) in 1987.

The goal of Alcohol Awareness Month is to educate individuals and communities about the impact of alcohol abuse and how it can affect a person’s physical, mental, and emotional health. Awareness helps to reduce the stigma surrounding alcohol addiction and encourages those who are struggling to seek help.

The Importance of Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol abuse is a severe problem in the U.S., with 29.5 million people aged 12 or over struggling with alcohol use disorder in 2022.1 It can have a devastating impact on health, relationships, and overall quality of life. Long-term alcohol abuse may cause severe medical problems, such as:

  • Liver damage.
  • Heart disease.
  • An increased risk of certain cancers.

It can also cause or worsen mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety.

Alcohol abuse may hurt relationships. Individuals can become isolated from friends and family, leading to problems at work and in their personal lives. In extreme cases, alcoholism can lead to legal issues and incarceration.

Alcohol Awareness Month is a time to step back and think about our relationship with alcohol. For those struggling with addiction, it’s an opportunity to take the first step toward a sober life. Those who do not experience addiction can reflect on the importance of moderation and responsible drinking.
