Sobriety might seem like a cut-and-dry concept—abstinence from drugs and alcohol—but some people are redefining sobriety with terms like “California sober.” At Recovery Centers of America, we don’t endorse the use of any addictive substances, but we do believe in meeting people where they are on their journey to recovery.
Redefining Sobriety: The Concept of “California Sober”
The term “California sober” refers to a recent trend where individuals choose to abstain from alcohol and hard drugs, but still occasionally use cannabis or psychedelics. The idea is that this approach allows for a more moderated, controlled use of substances, or that it can be a stepping stone towards full sobriety. This concept has gained popularity due to public figures like Demi Lovato and Brad Pitt openly discussing their experiences (though Lovato now identifies as fully sober).1
Marijuana Dangers
There is a growing acceptance of cannabis as legalization spreads—it’s currently a $40 billion dollar industry in 24 states.2 However, legalization doesn’t mean that cannabis is completely safe. It poses risks like lung and heart damage, harmful impacts on the developing brains of people under 25, and even an increased potential for psychosis.2
Using Marijuana to Replace Other Substances
Some people who identify as California sober believe that using marijuana can help them stay away from more harmful substances. However, this approach can backfire, especially if cannabis use goes hand-in-hand with drinking or other substances. Instead of self-medicating with a potentially addictive substance, individuals should seek professional help to address underlying issues and triggers that lead to substance use.
Ketamine and Other Psychedelics for Mental Health Treatment
Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, has been used as an FDA-approved treatment for depression and other mental health conditions since 2019.3 Other psychedelics like psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms) and MDMA (also known as ecstasy) are also being researched for their potential therapeutic benefits. However, these substances should only be used under the supervision of trained professionals in a controlled clinical setting. Simply trying psychedelics on your own does not constitute a safe or effective form of therapy, any more than using pain or anxiety medications without a prescription.
Does Sobriety Need to Be Redefined?
Some people abstain from even caffeine to stay away from mind-altering or potentially addictive substances. Some people struggle with nicotine addiction to the point where they cannot live without it, while others continue to smoke even after giving up alcohol and other substances.
There will always seem to be grey areas in the definition of sobriety, but one thing will always be clear: seeking professional help is the best way to achieve lasting recovery. Working with an addiction treatment team can help you or a loved one work through these complexities and establish a personalized path toward recovery with boundaries and guidelines.
