Substance Abuse During Pregnancy Is A Serious Problem

The joy of expecting a new baby can be one of the best times in life. But struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction while pregnant or while trying to raise a family can take the bliss out of this otherwise joyful time.

There are a lot of questions going through a mom-to-be’s mind: Where can I get help? Is treatment safe for me and my baby? Can I detox while pregnant? How can I live sober when the stress of life makes me want to use drugs or drink?

We get your fear. But here, you’ll be safe. You’ll be medically and clinically monitored. We’re here to help. We will go through every step of the process with you. You don’t have to live like this anymore.

Detox While Pregnant

Can you safely detox while pregnant? Absolutely. At Bracebridge, our medical and clinical providers are experienced with treating pregnant women, as well as psychiatric issues and addictions. It’s critical for a pregnant woman to be under a doctor’s care in order to safely detox from drugs or alcohol. This is for both her safety and the unborn child. Our treatment guidelines are:

  • Alcohol detoxification up to 32 weeks pregnant
  • Opioid & heroin detox up to 12 weeks pregnant
  • Benzodiazepines detox up to 32 weeks pregnant

Detoxification depends on the substance that has been used and the level of abuse, as well as the mother’s health and history. Each treatment plan is specific and unique to each patient. However, when using medically-assisted treatment, Bracebridge uses Methadone or Subutex. Both of these pose minimal risk to the unborn child and are safe for the mother to take through delivery.

For a patient to enter our Pregnant & Parenting Women Program, Bracebridge’s criteria are:

  • Patient must be under 32 weeks pregnant
  • Patient must have appropriate ultrasounds (specific to how far along in pregnancy)
  • Any recent lab data from OB
  • Must be approved by Bracebridge’s medical team
