Mercer County Providing Help to its Opioid-Dependent Citizens

New Jersey is at a crossroads, as the Garden State has been hit especially hard by the country’s ongoing opioid epidemic. An estimated 3,000 New Jersey residents are estimated to die from an opioid-related overdose by the end of 2018, making for another record-breaking year in a category no state ever wants to win.

Mercer County has been one of the regions most impacted by those who are opioid dependent. According to data from NJ.com, in the first six months of 2018 alone, 95 people in Mercer County died from opioid overdoses. That’s an average of nearly 2 deaths per day.

What Are Opioids and Why Are They a Problem?

Opiates include prescription pain medications such as fentanyl, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and morphine.

Heroin is also an opioid, and it’s one that has claimed a dangerous stake in Mercer County. During a Town Hall meeting in March 2018, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri stated a staggering bit of information:

“New Jersey and Mercer County have the highest heroin purity levels in the United States…It’s prevalent, it’s cheap, and it’s potent.”

Where Can the Opioid Dependent Get Help?

But the people of Mercer County (which includes Trenton, Princeton, Hamilton, Ewing, East Windsor, West Windsor, Lawrence, Pennington, Highstown, Hopewell, and Robbinsville), as well as those throughout New Jersey and the entire tri-state region, needn’t live in fear.
