Speaker Series: Scott Strode – Founder of The Phoenix

Scott Strode’s journey is captivating – it’s truly a story of triumph, and one that will empower you to go out and find your calling.

After experimenting with drugs and alcohol during his childhood years and struggling with mental health, Scott found himself addicted and constantly living in fear. He addressed that fear in the only way he knew how – with drugs and alcohol. But one day he found something that would change the trajectory of his life forever – sports.

Ice climbing in particular was a major influence on his recovery. Alone on a mountaintop, Scott found freedom, peace, and an insight into who he could be sober. From there, Scott unearthed more of himself through racing mountain bikes and competing in triathlons such as Iron Man, stating “every time I stood on top of a mountain or crossed a finish line, I was a little more a climber, and a little less an addict.”

Scott has gone on to share his passion and discovery of how physical fitness helped him to recover with other recovering addicts by founding The Phoenix: a sober active community across the country with only one requirement for membership – 48 hours of sobriety. In 2016, Scott teamed up with TEDx to keynote a speaking engagement on substance use disorder, trauma, mental health, and recovery. On February 20, Scott will bring his story to us, so be sure to register. All are welcome!
