Seeds to Recovery

Seeds to Recovery

Seeds to Recovery has one goal: To remind you why your family is fighting your loved one’s addiction together, and how to do it successfully while maintaining boundaries.

Addiction can tear a family apart just like any other disease; it takes children from their parents and parents from their children. The person with the substance abuse doesn’t suffer alone; the whole family suffers.

When your loved one decides to seek treatment, it’s important for your family to have treatment, too. There’s repair that needs to be done. And your loved one is much more likely to reach (and stay in) recovery with a strong support system.

Seeds to Recovery gives patients and their families the opportunity to engage in weekend-long education, support, healing, and reconnection. Families keep coming back, because we’re providing them with hope they haven’t had in a long time – or at all. Often, families are having conversations but not communicating. That’s what we’re doing here; helping patients and families have real conversations while healing.”
– Trish Caldwell, Director of Family Services

As a family member, there’s a good chance you dropped your loved one off at treatment – and that it was the worst moment of your life. We’re here to teach your family to learn, laugh, connect, and communicate again. Addiction is a disease that wants the person to isolate. In order to beat it, the person needs to feel connected.

Seeds to Recovery is a weekend retreat that teaches families to be back together as a unit without the topic of addiction steering the ship. It’s your chance to learn more about yourself and your family, as you navigate your way through your loved one’s addiction.

It’s OK to still be afraid and to have hope. The two days during the Seeds to Recovery retreat gives families plenty of time with their loved one, but also time for themselves. We provide the support through various resources, including interventionists, therapists, and an outside resources who comes in. This way, when your loved one is discharged, everyone still has a contact to reach out during the road back to recovery.”
– Trish Caldwell

Seeds to Recovery works well for families of all ages, especially young adults. As a parent or loved one, you likely weren’t done raising your child when their addiction set in. How are you supposed to support your family while also taking care of yourself and other members of your family? Seeds to Recovery helps you set up a healthy home for everyone.

Here’s what your Seeds to Recovery weekend will look like:

  • Saturday morning. Families arrive. You’re welcomed by an RCA team member and are given resources and support. An addiction expert will speak, such as one of our interventionists, our Director of Family Services, VP of Clinical Services, or our 12-Step expert. This is also your time to connect with and get support from other families.
  • Saturday afternoon. When was the last time your family shared a peaceful meal together? This is the start of reconnection with your loved one – you’ll share a meal together. We connect through nourishment; families laugh and have pleasant, normal conversations during these meals.
  • Saturday late afternoon/evening. The rest of your day will be spent receiving small bits of education on important topics, such as how to successfully communication, set boundaries, or actively listen. You and your loved one will be together during these sessions, so everyone hears the same language. Afterwards, you’ll take part in activities to reinforce and practice what your family has just learned.
  • Sunday all day. At the Maryland Center for Addiction and RCA at Devon, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in spiritual services with your loved one. While this is optional, learning about the spiritual aspect of recovery and implementing that into your family can be very helpful when it comes to maintaining a close, but healthy relationship with your loved one.

The rest of the day will be spent processing the information and resources you’ve received. You’ll spend time discussing how to set appropriate boundaries, moving towards understanding, deciding what you think recovery looks like, communication, family strengths, gratitude, hope, and recovery.

Please note: If you need hotel accommodations, we can provide discounted rates at local hotels.
