Designed for Men

The Recovery Centers of America’s Young Adult Men’s Program is a clinical product tailored to meet the needs of young men between the ages of 18 and 34. Our Young Men’s Program focuses on the specific issues and needs confronting men in this age group as they learn to recover from their substance use disorder.

Young men with substance use disorders often have problems with trauma, stress, anxiety, shame, anger, and an inability to focus. RCA’s individual and group therapy with experienced clinicians are designed to address these frequently seen conditions. RCA clinicians tailor their treatment of these issues using a male-focused approach to these common treatment concerns. Therapy sessions seek to establish trust so that the young man can discuss emotions and relationships – areas where young men traditionally have difficulties.

Issues with anger and shame frequently prevent recovery. RCA clinicians are trained to teach anger management skills and give the young man tools to combat feelings of shame.
Additionally, Young Men may also struggle with negative peer relationships, unhealthy sexual attitudes including sexual violence toward women, sleeping disorders, and ongoing desire for high-risk behaviors.

Five Common Challenges

Five Common Challenges Young Men Struggling with Addiction Face in Early Recovery.

Addressing Brian Development The brain is still developing well into a young man’s 20’s-and with late bloomers, beyond. RCA clinicians are trained in brain development of young men, and their propensity for risky behavior and lack of reason.

Overcome The Consequences Our clinicians will provide age-appropriate, single-gender therapy that helps them understand their risk-taking behaviors with drugs and alcohol have dangerous, life-threatening consequences. Therapists teach them how to overcome the consequences of bad decisions of the past and look forward to the future.

Gender-Specific Programs Young men learn differently than women. They are experiential learners who learn best in short sessions involving movement. We have a separate and distinct program for young men designed to focus on their learning styles. very.

Understand the Brain and Body Men learn best through sensory experiences, action and visual engagement. We offer a wide range of therapeutic activities in purposeful spaces which are designed for the psychological and physical well-being of our young male patients in recovery.

Short. Special. Teaching. Clinical content created for the Young Men’s Program is designed in 30-minute increments. With handheld technology and the pace of information delivery, we work within the young men’s attention span.

Now they can focus on the work of recovery and learn the tools and skills necessary for continued sobriety without social intimidation or distraction.

Young Men’s Program Life Skills Training includes:

  • Dealing with difficult people
  • Credit repair
  • Resume-writing
  • Interviewing skills
  • Cooking on a budget

Removing Distractions Young men behave differently when women are present. A co-ed environment in therapy may present sexual tension and social pressures that present distractions from their ability to focus on recovery.

Male-Only Groups Young men engaged in the Young Men’s Program will meet with a male-only group for “Primary Group”.

Gender-Separate Programs and Therapy provide a safe environment that helps young men open-up to the therapists and one another instead of putting up a stoic, masculine role to impress women.

Recover Emotion Young men have difficulty identifying and expressing emotion especially when women are present. If a young man can’t get in touch with his emotion and his reaction to those emotions, the work of recovery becomes more difficult.

Overcoming Anger and Shame From day one in treatment, our clinicians are trained to establish trust and rapport with our patients. Our therapists are skilled at allowing men to feel comfortable in group therapy so they can identify and discuss their feeling without fear of appearing weak or not masculine. We counsel young men to dig deep to identify their feelings and learn to react appropriately to those feelings in recovery. Issues with anger and shame frequently prevent recovery, our clinicians are trained to teach anger management skills and give young men the tools to combat feelings of shame.

Life-long Relationships Our Young Men’s Program provides what frequently lacks in society for a young man with substance use disorder: a sense of belonging. Young men have a need to be a part of a group or “brotherhood”. By bringing young men together in a men-only environment to address their specific physiological and psychological needs, they become part of an important group.

Friends Supporting Friends We give them the opportunity to feel they belong to a supportive community with a common goal of tackling addiction and beginning a life of meaningful and sustaining recovery.
