Trauma & Substance Use Disorder
The vast majority of people with Substance Use Disorder have also experienced some type of trauma in their lives. This training will help clinicians strengthen their skills in providing trauma-informed treatment to their patients with Substance Use Disorders by increasing their understanding of the effects of both trauma and substance use on the brain and exploring effective methods of helping people heal from trauma.
– To be able to define traumatic stress and Substance Use Disorder
– To provide information on the effects of substance use and trauma on brain functioning
– To understand the different types of trauma and the components of trauma-informed care
– To develop a basic understanding of effective treatments for people with traumatic exposure and substance use
Trish Caldwell, MFT, LPC, CCDP-D, CAADC, CCTP, the Family Services Director for Recovery Centers of America, a therapist with a private practice, a contracted speaker for agencies and school districts, and a current adjunct instructor at Jefferson University. In addition to family therapy, she specializes in trauma, substance use disorders, ADHD, and the adolescent and young adult populations. Her prior work experience includes her work as the clinical manager and supervisor in substance use treatment and has worked closely with the drug courts, probation and judges in Delaware and Montgomery Counties. Additionally, Trish created the first Young Offenders Treatment Program in Delaware County, serving first time offenders with Drug charges. Trish has extensive training in treating trauma and substance use disorders throughout her 25 year career.
